Motueka River - South Island, New Zealand

“Setting a new standard in hosted fly fishing”

The Motueka River region is without doubt one of New Zealand’s best trout fishing areas. The river has its headwaters in the Nelson Lakes National Park and is joined on its journey to the sea by a number of rivers from the nearby Kahurangi NP. The Wangapeka, Pearse, Baton and Motupiko all boast crystal clear waters and large wily Brown Trout with the Motueka river repeatedly topping the list of brown trout numbers (NZ Fish & Game).

Average catch size of brown trout in this region is approx 3lb-4lb, with 6lb plus fish quite common. The chance of a trophy 10lb brown trout may only be a cast away. Dry fly and Nymph fishing are both popular at different times of the season.

The lodge can arrange for heli- fishing trips to the amazing back country wilderness of the Kahurangi mountains. Rarely fished and very productive streams that are inaccessible by road and are just a short flight away.

Accommodation

The lodge sits on a private 150 acre forest property on the banks of the Motueka River and has stunning views down the river to the mountains of the Kahurangi in the distance.

Built in the style of the grand Alaskan fishing lodges the building is constructed of timber and stone from the surrounding area. The two story lodge has 4 double guest bedrooms each with en-suite and commanding views of the river and mountains. Downstairs is a bar, games room, dining area and gourmet kitchen.

Host’s Kate and John Kerr have been in the fishing lodge business for over 10 years and are renowned for the hospitality and their culinary skills. They will ensure that you will enjoy a fly fishing holiday to remember and you will likely become good friends.

Guides

The guides are all professional trout guides who have fished the surrounding area for many years. They have intimate knowledge of the regions rivers, weather patterns and entomology and will ensure that you have the maximum opportunity to land many fish. The lodge has a state of the art fly trying den where guests can experiment, share patterns and have tuition in the art.

The lodge will supply rods, reels, flies and some waders are available. Please email us before you depart home, just to make sure we have your size available. Feel free to bring along you own equipment. A list of what is recommended in New Zealand can be emailed to you on request.

Other Activities

The Nelson area acts like a giant cultural magnet attracting both artists and visitors in a fusion of creativity that exists all year round. Over 350 working artists are based throughout the region, offering a rich diversity of styles and many are within an hours drive from the lodge where the artists invite visitors into their home-based studios and welcome the opportunity to talk about their work. There are many award winning wineries nearby as well as three of New Zealand’s best national parks. The coastal Abel Tasman NP and the alpine Nelson Lakes and Kahurangi National Parks.

We can arrange transfers or self drive hire cars from Nelson which is 50 mins from the lodge. Nelson airport has several flights daily from both Wellington and Christchurch International airports with connections to Melbourne, Sydney and Brisbane as well as North America, Asia and Europe.
