Rotorua Lakes - North Island, New Zealand
This premium location is within what many consider to be New Zealand's best wild trout fishery, the Rotorua Lakes district. Pristine waters and crystal clear streams are signature qualities to the district. Your hosts Pat and Helen know how to give you the best fly fishing holiday New Zealand has to offer.
These waters allow for a full range of styles and techniques from fishing the evening rise to stalking wily browns in rivers. Other options are walking the lake edges for cruising fish, still water nymphing or drift fishing. For the wilderness enthusiast, there are helicopter flights into back country locations; a true angler's paradise.
Within an hour's drive of the lodge there are access to 16 lakes and several spring feed creeks and rivers. Because of the diversity of the Rotorua region's trout waters and the vast fishery it offers, you have the unique opportunity to fish a variety of techniques in some of the best trout water in the world.
The lodge is set on the shore of Lake Rerewhakaaitu so it is only a few strides to the waters edge to try your luck. Lake Rotorua and its feeder streams offer easily the most prolific and hungry trout population in New Zealand. There are other lakes and rivers too numerous to detail here. All we can say is that even if you fish here for a lifetime, you still won't fish it all.

Over the October - December period, nymphing is the most productive technique. However, with weather conditions permitting, anglers can expect dry fly during the warmer part of the day. January to April is the best period for dry fly. During the winter months of May - August, there is exceptional fishing as the main spawning run starts. It is the opportune time to target trophy rainbows and the occasional large brown. For the hearty angler who can brave wintery conditions, there is a bonus of significant winter runs in the rivers.
Accommodation
Sited on the shores of Lake Rerewhakaaitu the lodge is uniquely the only lakeside property and so ensures absolute privacy for guests. Nestled in a rural setting, with Mount Tarawera holding sentry to the North, it takes full advantage of the majestic lake and rural views.

Guides
The guides are of the highest caliber and all are registered with the Professional Guides Association. Pat is a leading guide and can offer anglers his expertise from a lifetime of fly fishing and owner of a specialist fishing tackle store for 15 years. He has represented New Zealand at the World Fly Fishing Championships for 6 of those years and has fished both North and South Islands of New Zealand. He always delights in sharing his experiences. Fly tying and creating new patterns has always been a specialty and a fly tying den has been specifically designed for this purpose. Fly tiers can experiment, share patterns and have tuition in the art.
Pat is a prolific fly tyer whose patterns are featured in a variety of books and magazines. His extensive knowledge of entomology gives his creations that added edge of realism which is quite handy in some of the very clear waters you will fish.
