Taupo Raft Fishing - North Island, New Zealand

New Zealand is renowned as one of the best trout fisheries in the world. The country's isolation as an island nation, the clean green environment and the passion of the Kiwi's to keep it that way makes it one of the world's most beautiful places. It is dominated by pristine rivers, lakes and mountains and has many wilderness and national park areas.

Lake Taupo in the high country of the North Island is extra special as it enjoys year round trout fishing. The lake and some of the rivers are open over the four seasons with some of the tributaries closing over winter for the spawning season. Over 40 rivers and 4 lakes are in the area including New Zealand's largest lake, Taupo. These can be accessed by road, boat or helicopter.

The region is most renowned as a rainbow trout fishery although there is an abundance of brown trout at certain times of the year, mostly the warmer months. Tens of thousands of trout migrate up the rivers to their spawning grounds from May to October providing great opportunity for Nymph and dry fly fishing.

The Mohaka wilderness is an isolated area to the east of Taupo. It is truly a wild and scenic river and the only way in is by helicopter. This ensures an un-crowded fishing experience and the rainbows and browns are both plentiful.

Accommodation

Enjoy stunning views of this wild country as a helicopter flies you, your guide and your equipment into the Mohaka wilderness area. Raft down the river stopping at various locations to walk the river and try your luck casting for trout. Ian, your guide has done this trip on countless occasions and he knows the best and most likely places where the fish might be lurking.

Camp overnight on the rivers edge using dome tents and camp mattresses brought in with you. All equipment is supplied and is tough, good quality camping gear. Your guide will chose a campsite depending on weather and river conditions and your preferences. You might be able to relax in a natural hot spring at some sites.

Relax in the evening and enjoy the feeling of being deep in natural wilderness in a land that has no snakes or dangerous animals. Try your hand at the evening rise whilst your guide prepares hearty and wholesome camp style meals.

Guides

All the guides we employ are local people who are passionate about what they do to the point that they go fishing on their day off! Most of the guiding on this unique trip is done by Ian and he knows the river like the back of his hands and will vary the days fishing according to you experience and preferences and the prevailing local conditions.
